When the oak decomposes the Lichens sprout – Oscar Furbacken

Opening wednesday March 18th 4-7 pm

Through this new work Oscar Furbacken is dealing with the perishable versus life. The artist also challenges us to become aware of the forgotten little wonders that surround us.

The work describes a natural phenomenon within Stockholm. This exhibition is constituted of three parts: a title, a photograph and a painting. On top of that the viewers get to see a time lapse video sequence that shows the whole painting process (see attached video-still) – it also gives us a hint on how it might look when the lichens develop.
The large painting describes the process in a quite naturalistic way, but the extreme enlargement grants these organisms a new authority. The documenting photograph helps us understand the scale and setting of the event.

About the artist: Oscar Furbacken, 28 years old, is doing his third year at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. During the spring 2008 he attended the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris. Furbacken investigates how factors of scale and environment influences our perception of reality. About his obsession to enlarge the microscopic the artist claims that “no matter what medium I use, high precision is a must and many times I need to find new technical solutions to translate my visions into a physical work. But in the end, technique is only a tool to make “the little” available - it should feel simple and evident.

(lichen = a plant that is an association of fungus and algae)
