Beyond Breath

at Östermalmshallen, Stockholm

Bortom Andetagen, 2012

plottered inkjet prints with wall-distancing

The series "Beyond breath” (Bortom andetagen) is based on documentations of lichens from grave stones. Their symbiotic constitution makes these fascinating organisms a small ecosystem of their own. The Swedish scientific name of the photographed lichen species is blåslavar, which alludes to the fact that they seem filled with air. The pieces are randomly spread across the wall, mimicking the way they behave in the wild.

This work was originally created for a site specific project at the Katarina Church and have later been adapted for various other exhibition spaces, such as Hotel Diplomat (Stockholm, 2013), TCG Nordica (Kunming China 2013), Jinsun Gallery (Seoul – Korea, 2016) and now even at Östermalmshallen (Stockholm, 2023) along with a film about urban microhabitats.

Thanks to Stockholms stad, Lisa Elmqvist and curator ART.27 Gunilla Hedén!
