Wastelands

Wastelands, 2014

Bronze-, copper- och brass, metal thread, latex and acrylic

The series is inspired by the recent scientific practices of myco-restoration. A therm coined by the mushroom expert Paul Stammets. Certain types of fungi mycelium is used to clean areas of contaminated soil, thus paving the way for nature to recover from industrial abuse.

This project is the result of a residency in Kunming, China during the summer of 2013. The objects are made of recycled spill pieces from a Chinese bronze foundry. The surfaces have been refined by the artist and hand sculpted bits of colorful growth added here and there.
