Gatherings
Gatherings, 2020
recycled wood, nails, concrete filler, sand, paint
The series “Gatherings” is inspired by the so called Nail Lichen and similar organisms that are being used in ecology to locate areas of habitat worth preserving. These organisms, that actually resemble nails and needles, are extremely small and hard to spot with the naked eye but gather in large numbers on murken wood. The title may also refer to the challenge of creating thriving communities in an individualistic era with the added restrictions of an ongoing pandemic.
The pieces are made with basic construction materials such as wood and nails. As a way of mimicking the tear of time and the violence that humanity has inflicted on nature, the sculptural process involves reshaping the recycled wood with heavy tools thus breaking off chips and hammering in needles and nails.
